A street food pop-up is coming to Chipping Norton. Specialising in big flavours and locally sourced produce, everything is cooked over an open-air wood fire pit. Following the success of 2021, Pit Kitchen is returning with its alfresco dining pop-up at a new hilltop location on the Cornwell Estate that offers great views.

With reclaimed timber tables lit by festoon lights, there are sailcloth awnings that ‘protect you from the elements’ and fire pits to keep you warm on the brisker summer nights. Opening this Wednesday, May 18, this temporary eatery will run until late October.

Featuring Middle Eastern style food, you can expect a range of shawarma and mezzes which you can enjoy Wednesdays to Saturdays from 5pm to 10pm (last orders at 9pm). Last year the team had the mantra of ‘a few things done well’ and that certainly holds true this time around as well with their short menu of hearty Middle Eastern dishes inspired by East London’s street food scene.

As well as local and fresh ingredients, Pit Kitchen uses reclaimed material in its design where possible, for example, the container kitchen is constructed from upcycled timber and the long, communal tables are made from sanded scaffolding planks. The business is headed by two brothers, Adam and James Thomas, who have 15 years of catering experience between them.

James said: “We are super excited to be bringing our favourite bits of East London’s casual dining scene back to Chipping Norton again this year. Our food will continue to pay homage to the Turkish classics we discovered around Dalston and Hackney that have brought us so much joy (and challenged our waistlines!) over the past few years, with a few ‘cheffy’ twists inspired by some of our East London gastronomic heroes.

“The vibe is unapologetically casual, and the flavours are big across our nibbles, starters, mains and pudding menus, while our new field site is once again surrounded by views to die for!” With vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options available, there will be something for everyone.

Other than food, the duo also serve drinks including a rotating selection of craft beers as well as a well-curated wine list. Though previously based in London, the brothers are bringing the popular street food scene to a rural location for the summer.

You can find the pop-up at OX7 5YF, just off the A44. Note that no bookings can be made, it is walk-ins only and a takeaway service is available. Parking and toilets are available on-site.
