One of the celebrities who has been very candid about her experience with alopecia is Jada Pinkett Smith, and her latest Instagram post about the condition is no exception. The Red Table Talk host first spoke in 2018 about her struggles with hair loss, and in her newest video she again handles it with characteristic good humour and grace.

‘Now at this point, I can only laugh,’ she says, pointing out a line of baldness running horizontally across the top of her closely-cropped scalp. ‘Y’all know I’ve been struggling with alopecia and just all of a sudden one day, look at this line right here. Look at that.’

She continued: ‘So it just showed up like that and this is going to be a little bit more difficult for me to hide. So I thought I’d just share it so y’all are not asking any questions.’

‘But you know mama’s going to put some rhinestones in there. I’m going to make me a little crown. That’s what mama’s going to do,’ she added.

The actor captioned the video: ‘Mama’s gonna have to take it down to the scalp so nobody thinks she got brain surgery or something. Me and this alopecia are going to be friends … period!’

Although hair loss is often thought to be a men’s issue, it is in fact common in women, with different types (including alopecia and female pattern baldness) and various causes. According to one study, hair loss affects approximately 40% of women by the age of 50, and many women notice hair thinning during key life stages such as post-partum and during the menopause.
