A council has applied for an injunction to stop illegal building works that have started without permission at a travellers’ site in Hinckley.

The unlawful works have included the building of chalet cabins and mobile units, ground works, and the erection of fencing, at land off Leicester Road, opposite Hinckley Rugby Club.

A temporary stop notice was obtained on Sunday, May 2, after reports of the unauthorised works taking place on Saturday, May 1.

A spokeswoman for Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council said: “A temporary stop notice is the most powerful tool that a local planning authority has to prevent unauthorised works; it comes into effect immediately and non-compliance of the notice can lead to prosecution and a significant fine.

“However, despite these best efforts, unauthorised works have continued in breach of the temporary stop notice.

“The borough council will now apply to the courts today (May 4) for an injunction.

“The council will also progress prosecutions for flouting the temporary stop notice.

“The borough council will continue to monitor the situation and, with the help of partners, manage local community impacts.”
