Dear Katie,

My mother, who is 96, still manages to live independently on her own. However, like the late Queen, she has restricted mobility. I took her to the local Boots and she was diagnosed with age-related hearing loss. She bought two hearing aids at a cost of £2,600.

Unfortunately, she lost one of them. We think my one-year-old cockapoo, Roger, was the culprit. My pet and household insurance will not pay out. Boots wants £2,345 for a single replacement, which seems excessive.

Dear reader,

I can understand why this felt extortionate, but the initial cost of the hearing aids was not just for the devices. It also included the fitting, service and maintenance.

In addition, Boots said pairs of hearing aids were heavily discounted compared with buying single ones. That is just its pricing model. So I’m afraid that Boots is not prepared to reduce the price.

Your mother would have been offered insurance when she bought the hearing aids, but she declined. With young Roger sniffing around, this turned out to be a costly mistake. Perhaps this is something to consider for next time.
