Former London chief and public health recognised in Birthday Honours – Local Government Chronicle

A former chief executive of Tower Hamlets LBC and Ofsted has been awarded a damehood in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.

Christine Gilbert was director of education before becoming chief executive at Tower Hamlets in 1997.  She was credited with leading a transformation of the council’s structure and services before joining Ofsted in 2006.

Ms Gilbert is now visiting professor at UCL Institute of Education and chair of Camden Learning, a school-led locality partnership……..

A former chief executive of Tower Hamlets LBC and Ofsted has been awarded a damehood in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.

Christine Gilbert was director of education before becoming chief executive at Tower Hamlets in 1997.  She was credited with leading a transformation of the council’s structure and services before joining Ofsted in 2006.

Ms Gilbert is now visiting professor at UCL Institute of Education and chair of Camden Learning, a school-led locality partnership. She also served as acting chief executive at Brent LBC for three years from 2012 to 2015.

Some 1,134 people received an honour as part of the Queen’s Jubilee Birthday Honours List 2022, with nearly 60% of the awards celebrating people’s contribution to their community.

Government of Jersey chief executive Suzanne Wylie was given an OBE for services to local government in Northern Ireland. She worked at Belfast City Council for three decades; starting as an environmental health officer and rising to chief executive in 2014.

Rhondda Cynon Taf CBC Leader, Andrew Morgan (Lab), has been awarded an OBE.

Cllr Morgan was recognised for his leadership following severe flooding in 2020. He is also the leader of the Welsh Local Government Association.

Huw David (Lab), presiding officer at the WLGA and leader of Bridgend CBC was also awarded and OBE.

Dr Andrew Furber, regional director of Public Health, North West at the Department for Health & Social Care has also been awarded an OBE for services to public health. Dr Furber, a former president of the Association of Directors of Public Health who was DPH at Wakefield MBC from 2013 to 2018, said: “My public health service has always been as part of a team. Thank you to all who have been with me on the journey.”

Doncaster MBC’s director of public health Dr Rupert Suckling was also recognised for services to public health, particularly during the Covid pandemic, and has been awarded an MBE.

Commenting on Twitter, he said: “It’s hard to celebrate given the deaths & disability from COVID in [Doncaster] & now the cost of living crisis too. It’s also hard to be singled out from @MyDoncaster  team & all fantastic Public Health Directors @ADPHUK.

“I’m glad public health in local government has been recognised and I look forward to my colleagues seeing recognition too. Public health has and will always be a team endeavour.”

Catherine Mann, Staffordshire CC’s interim assistant director for culture, rural & safer communities, was given an MBE for her work promoting a …….
