Sunshine Coast Police are warning drivers that driving whilst tired is not just falling asleep, it also incorporates brief lapses of concentration.

These lapses can have the same amount of consequences as falling asleep behind the wheel.

Driver fatigue is when you do not get enough sleep or if you have not had quality sleep.

Being fatigued can be an impairment on your driving, similar to driving under the influence of alcohol.

Fact: Even when your eyes are off the road for just two seconds, a vehicle moving at 60km/h travels more than 33 metres. The average person’s time to react to an event is 1.8 seconds.

Driver fatigue related crashes usually occur when the driver is alone. If you know anyone who will be travelling alone this Christmas, encourage them to invite a passenger or arrange frequent stops during the journey.

Signs of driver fatigue:

  • Frequent yawning
  • Head nodding
  • Drifting in and out of your lane
  • Irregular speeds
  • Difficulty keeping your eyes open
  • Daydreaming
  • Slower reaction time
  • Seeing things that are not there.

It is safer to take that power nap and to arrive late, instead of not arriving at all.
