St. Augustine was worn out.

A day after playing two close games in the Pat H. Alexander Basketball Showcase, the Knights lost to Westbury Christian, 70-35 Saturday. St. Augustine head coach Rodrigo Romo said fatigue was a major factor in the game.

“Our legs weren’t quite there this morning,” Romo said. “Aside from the game [Saturday] morning we should have a pretty good season if we play good basketball. We have a veteran group returning.”

Chris Ramirez said he and the other players felt drained, but there was more to the loss.

“A day’s rest would have been better, but that’s not an excuse,” Ramirez said. “We need to score more, rebound and play better as a team.”

Four Wildcats scored in double-figures with Zaire Walker leading with 18. The team shot 50% from the field and the perimeter.

St. Augustine was halved on the scoreboard and in shooting percentage at just 25%. Estevan Barrientos was the leading scorer with 14 points. He has looked good thus far into the season after coming off a major knee injury.

Overall, Westbury Christian was more energetic. Aerik Holcombe, a guard, grabbed five offensive rebounds and Jalen Trimmer had five steals.

The Wildcat bench and fans were rowdier, which the players fed off and led to the gap in intensity. The home crowd meanwhile was more withdrawn.

Rafa Garcia was a standout defender for the Knights, blocking two shots and contesting several more at the rim.

St. Augustine finished the round-robin tournament with a 2-1 record, and its season continues Nov. 12 at LBJ.
