A group of locals led by NHS staff from North Middlesex Hospital marched this weekend in protest against plans to expand a waste incinerator in Edmonton, North London.

Local councils in North London – including Enfield, Waltham Forest, Haringey, Islington, Camden and Hackney – are set to hold a meeting on December 16 in which a majority vote will decide on replacing the current incinerator with a bigger one with a large waste-burning capacity.

The current incinerator, located in the Edmonton EcoPark on Advent Way, just by the A406, has been burning waste in Edmonton since 1971.

Now reaching the end of its operational life, the incinerator is due to be decommissioned as soon as the transition can be made to a new one, if the North London councils vote in favour of awarding a construction contract for the project.

An action group called Doctors Against the Edmonton Incinerator, spearheaded by Dr Edward Tranah of North Middlesex Hospital, have been protesting against the North London Waste Authority’s plans to enlarge the incinerator, instead calling on council leaders to support cleaner, alternative ways of dealing with local waste.

Starting at Edmonton Green station, the doctors marched down to the EcoPark holding posters and signs condemning the plans.

Speaking to MyLondon, Dr Tranah explains: “The way waste is managed in North London at the moment is that if it’s not recycled by the household, the business or the school, it’s put into a black bag – no matter what it is – and sent to an incinerator which is located in Edmonton off the North Circular.

“It’s indiscriminate. It’s not sorted. Once it’s in a black bag, it just gets sent to the incinerator and it gets burnt”.
