British troops left Afghanistan over the weekend, bringing to an end the UK’s 20-year military involvement in the country.

Neighbouring Birmingham has already agreed to take in 80 Afghan interpreters and their families and more local authorities are being called upon to assist with the resettlement programme.

A Solihull Council spokesperson said: “We are committed to helping families and we want to ensure the support networks are in place before committing to a final number.

“Council staff are also working with organisations across the borough to help provide immediate support and humanitarian aid for people being repatriated from Afghanistan.”

Birmingham Airport has been a key gateway for refugee planes out of Kabul and organisations across Solihull have been working with the council to provide immediate support to arrivals.

Local collection points have already been flooded with donations of supplies and people can find out more about where to donate on the council’s website.

Councillor Ian Courts, leader of Solihull Council, said last week: “As a local authority we have been doing all we can to support those in need.

“We are working closely with organisations across the borough to help provide immediate support to those who are being repatriated from Afghanistan before they move to other parts of the UK.

“The dedication and commitment of those involved in the relief effort, including essential services, airport staff and volunteers, as well as our own amazing staff, was something to behold when I have visited the airport this week.”
