Everton, Leeds and Burnley are battling it out to survive the drop in one of the tightest Premier League relegation dogfights ever, but regardless of what happens, the surviving teams could end up on the list of worst teams to escape the drop.

The Toffees face Brentford at Goodison Park this afternoon, while Leeds take on Brighton and Burnley travel to Tottenham. Jesse Marsch’s Leeds side are currently in the drop zone, and have played a game more than the two sides above them.

Either way, the Whites’ horrific goal difference going into the final two games of the campaign means they’ll almost definitely go down as one of the worst teams in history to stay up – if they manage to escape.

Wigan’s team from the 2009/10 season had the worst goal difference of any to survive a relegation dogfight. The Latics finished in 16th place that season with a goal difference of -42 after shipping goals all year.

Bradford’s side from the 1999/2000 campaign is next on the list, joint with Huddersfield’s team that dramatically avoided the drop in 2018. Both teams managed to stay up despite a goal difference of -30.

Watford have gained a reputation in recent years for yo-yoing between the Championship and Premier League, and the Hornets only appear on the list once – when they had a whopping -28 goal difference in the 2016/17 season.

Southampton are next up on the list, with a goal difference of -27 in the 1998/99 season, before two entries from Aston Villa. The Villains remarkably survived the drop twice with a goal difference of -26 both times.

Considering Leeds currently have a goal difference of -38, they’re more than likely going to end up on that list if they wiggle their way out of the scrap at the …….
